About tjameswhite.com
This site began as a convenient way to distribute birthday and Christmas lists to family and friends far away. The blog, originally a Blogger account, was added as a fact-gathering exercise for work.
Grown from that is what you see before you. It's now a lab where I experiment, develop and showcase my HTML and CSS skills. I will also be creating some PHP-driven bits and pieces.
About T. James White
I work as a Web Content Developer at a Detroit-based publishing firm. While my core job is gathering and formatting content for our e-mail newsletters and various sections of our web site, out of necessity I have learned more and more (X)HTML and CSS. I have also developed a simple template for all of our newsletters, which has sped up production time, and I am currently working on a completely CSS-driven template for our corporate web site. Our parent company is impressed with my work so far and will hopefully employ it as the model for the other divisions.
In my spare time I practice t'ai chi[1], fiddle with my race car[2], read[3], play games[4] with friends and think about trying to write[5].
But mostly my spare time is taken up by my daughter.
Obviously, I play around with web development. Speaking of which, I'm available.
Technical Details
This site is built with XHTML, CSS and PHP. It is hosted by A Small Orange and the blog is powered by WordPress. My goal is to have valid and well-formed code, but please don't bust my chops if not everything validates.
Inspiration and the basis for the code came from a variety of places, most notably A List Apart, mezzoblue.com, Designing with Web Standards, Owen Briggs' Box Lessons, Floatutorial, Eric Meyer on CSS and too many others to list.
Also, there may be subtle bits to the site that you aren't seeing if you're using Internet Explorer. For better web surfing and web security, I highly recommend that you download Firefox. It's simply a better browser.
Notes
- T'ai chi is the Yang short form as taught my Master Chen man-ching. I've studied five years now, including a year of sword form.
- The race car is a 198x Dodge Omni and is classified in the SCCA Club Racing's Improved Touring category.
- The reading is mostly science fiction. My current fixations include Terry Pratchett (who I have been reading since Mort), Alfred Bester and Warren Ellis. I'm also fond of David Wingrove and wish his Chung Kuo books were easier to get a hold of.
- For games, I love Cheap Ass Games games, cribbage, a bit of poker, Amber and the occasional hack-and-slash computer game (they just take too damn long to play).
- I've dabbled with writing and have produced a couple of short stories I'm proud of, as well as a few decent poems. The blog is suppose to help me write more frequently. Yeah...
