Bought & Sold

Finally it is done: our house is sold and a new one bought.

We closed on both houses today. While it makes for a long day, it is finally over with. We didn’t ever think we’d reach this point, and even today there was some mild drama.

After being postponed a week[1], we finally go to close on both houses. At the first closing – selling Lake Dr. – things went pretty well, until they told us that the money wasn’t there. Seems that the buyer’s mortgage company didn’t wire the money. This meant that we didn’t have cash to take to our second closing. Apparently this isn’t uncommon and we’d just close in escrow on both houses. Be that as it may, it annoyed the hell out of us.

With nothing to do between closings, we did a last walk-through of Parkdale. The seller is completely moved out, but he took the bar stools he was suppose to leave. He simply forgot and is bringing them back. Really not a big deal, but damn it, we want them.

Luckily the second closing went very smoothly. The seller wasn’t worried about not having his cash (he doesn’t really need it) and in the end it didn’t matter. About a half hour after signing all of the paper the checks arrived. Our seller got to walk away with his proceeds, while Sarah and I simply signed ours over as downpayment on the new house. Oh, he did give us keys, so the house is really and truely ours now.

It was nice to see the house completely empty. In an odd way it looks smaller without furniture in it. It also looks slightly older because of all of the little cracks and nicks that were behind furniture or where pictures where hung. Nothing I’m worried about, the house just looked, well, lonely. Not to worry – Sarah is taking our first load over tomorrow.

I’ll be without Internet for a few days until Wide Open West shows up at the new house, so I may not answer e-mails or post much during the next week (though I check e-mail at work).

[1] We have more info on the delay and I will post it at a later date.
