Wi-Fi-Orama
Thursday at worked my ancient computer was finally replaced by a brand new laptop. So much faster. So much prettier. And now I can actually work from home.
Of course, since I requested a wireless card for the laptop, I had to install a wireless network at home. So this morning I installed a Netgear WGT624 Wireless Firewall Router.
It took me a couple of tries to get everything up and running, but I can now carry the laptop out to the furthest end of the backyard and still be online. Setting up the router was really pretty easy — the biggest delay was caused by me not reading the final step of the directions carefully.
I’ve never set up a network before, so I wasn’t sure how long getting everything running would take. Netgear’s documentation is pretty non-existent, but the IT guys at work put together a really nice walk through. I was most confused by the fact that nothing refers to the desktop computer. The instructions walk you through hooking up the laptop, configuring the router and wireless connections, applying security, etc. But nowhere does it say what to do with your existing wired machine. Turns out you don’t do anything, but that would have been nice to know.
