Time

Incredibly Olivia is one week old today. It doesn’t seem like Sarah and I have actually done much during the week — partly due to the heat, partly due, of course, to being new parents.

I had plans to

  1. Cut the grass
  2. Paint the new porch trim
  3. Replace the brakes on my car

None of that has gotten done. For starters, it’s been too damn hot to do most of it. Plus we’ve had visitors (well, Olivia has).

And, frankly, it takes two inexperienced people to take care of one little girl. It’s not that it is difficult — eat, poop, sleep — just frequent. Anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours the cycle repeats. And when she sleeps, we are so enamored with her that we just sit and stare. A small child is remarkable to look at.

The last two days she has added incessant crying. If you have never had a small human in your care, this will try your patience. When she starts to cry we run through the check list:

  • Hungry? Just fed.
  • Diaper? Clean.
  • um….

That’s it. That is the end of our kit. We rock her. We talk to her. We offer more food. We wonder what we have gotten into.

In the end, she will finally fall asleep. And we stare at her. And wonder how such a little thing can make such a big sound.

She is better today. So are we.

[OK, I promise that this site won’t turn into the Baby Olivia Blog, but hey, I’m a proud new dad. I’ll get to other stuff again. And mom, I know you’d be happy with the Baby Olivia Blog.]

  2. I must admit, one of the most frustrating things with kids before they can talk is not being able to ask them what’s wrong. I’ve got one to add to your list, though: burp. :)

  3. Ahhhh … yes, burping is quite important. Get in the habit of doing it after every meal. For us tho … having 3 boys … burping is common place. Bodily release = instant comedy.

  4. Yes, burping is part of the routine. I just lump it in with the feeding and so didn’t include it as a separate item.

Tonight she has added something new: projectile vomiting. Ah, what fun.
