Death of the PDA?

At an Internet professionals meeting this morning we were discussing new technologies and what not. I mentioned that I use Yahoo Mail to keep notes, contacts and what not, especially since my old Visor Platinum gave up the ghost. Nearly everyone else chimed in that their PDA also died. (My wife’s can be included in the list of casualties.)

I am now boldly proclaiming that the PDA is a thing of the past. Dead. Gone. Obsolete.

Hyperbole? Perhaps. But we have other gadgets to carry and the PDA just doesn’t do enough to warrant lugging it around.

Yes it holds contact info. But I need those numbers in my cell phone to use them.

Yes some play music, but not nearly as good as an iPod.

Yes they store data, but thumb drives are much easier to carry and use.

So what use is left for the old PDA? I certainly don’t miss mine.

  1. I gave mine to Kristen after her’s died, and I haven’t missed it since.

I’m not much of a techno-geek, so I’ve actually gone back to writing down the things I really need in my planner (as I did before I got a PDA).

  2. To-do lists and a calendar, mostly. That’s what I use mine for, and it would bug me to have to write all that stuff out manually. Besides it is much, much smaller than the planner I used to use.

  3. I use mine for tons of things - to-do list, calendar, notes, addresses, phone numbers, shopping list, check lists, databases of things like recipes, calculator, books to read or games to play if I’m stuck somewhere without my computer, e-mail…. I could live without it, but I’d rather not.

  4. I forgot to mention, for to-do lists I’ve moved to Ta-da Lists — it’s free, online and accessible where ever I go.

I used to use my Visor for simple notes and to-dos and what not, and at first I missed that functionality. But now I usually have a small notepad that’s the same size as a PDA. For my use, it’s perfect. I’m thinking of purchasing a Moleskin notebook or planner for the future.
